October STEM Snippets News

October has been filled with more innovation, creativity, and critical thinking from our CAES Cardinal engineers.

Virtual pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade engineers came up with some creative new ways to use a stick. They also learned how to create patterns and look for patterns in their environment. They learned engineers use patterns, shapes, and creativity.

Picture 1: Love to see all the students coming to class. Picture 2: "This is not a stick. It's a water dish for birds. My pattern is green, blue, green, blue..." Picture 3: "Look at my pattern!"

Picture 1 & 2: "This is not a stick. It's a cat toy. My pattern is pink, pink, blue, pink, pink, blue..." Picture 3: "This is not a stick, it's a hammer. My pattern is yellow, green, blue, yellow, green, blue..."

Picture 1: "This is not a stick, it's a wand!" Picture 2: "This is not a stick, its a caterpillar." Picture 3: This is not a stick, it's a pen."

Picture 1: "This is not a stick. It's a comb." Picture 2: "This is not a stick. It's a kite." Picture 3: This is not a stick. It's three things in one. It's a feather duster, broom, and wand."

Preschooler: "This is not a stick. It's a broom. My pattern is green, red, green, red..."

Virtual 2nd and 3rd grade students learned about civil engineering and bridge building last month. Down below are some photos they shared.

Kindergarten students learned about balance and foundations. They engineered the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree, bridges to hold pumpkins, and other structures. They learned structures need a firm and wide foundation.

First Grade learned about 2-D and 3-D shapes. They engineered Spookley the square pumpkin and other 2-D and 3-D shapes. They also invented something new from a stick.

From left to right, picture 5: "This is not a stick. It's a sword." Picture 6: "This is not a stick. It's a puppet."

Second and third graders continue to improve on face mask designs. They learned about simple machines and built balloon cars. They also learned about STEM related careers working with cars and mechanical engineering.

October is a wonderful time to get outside and explore science and engineering. Daily STEM is filled with fun family engineering ideas. I particularly like the STEM challenge: Build a pumpkin seed separator. (Click on the picture to see other issues.)

Click here for a fun creepy crawly no prep. time lesson you can do.

Please remember all Encore teachers post recorded virtual lessons and enrichment activities on their Clever page for those who would like to participate.

It's a treat to teach your children.

Have a wonderful day!

Remember engineering is everywhere you look.

Stay curious.

Love,

Mrs. Hall
